Halloween Pumpkin Carving Day with Albert
Pumpkin Carving – Oscar the Bunny
Well, it’s that time of year again when all the ghouls and ghosts come out to play… yes it’s Halloween!
I needed a break from designing, so I wanted to tackled another art form – Pumpkin Carving! I decided to take some pics and share with you the step by step process of creating Oscar. Perhaps this will inspire your own pumpkin carving ideas!
First you need a couple of tools before you get started:
- Pumpkin carving pattern / stencil
- Pumpkin poker (to trace your pattern)
- Scooper (to clean out pumpkin seeds and pulp)
- Pumpkin carving precision knife / saw
- One large juicy pumpkin
So lets get started!
First you need the right pumpkin for your pumpkin carving idea or Halloween character. Since I’m going to carve out a bunny with super large ears I needed a taller shaped pumpkin so I bought this beast of a squash!

The Juicy Beast!
I guess I couldn’t take a break from designing on my computer after all! I needed to create a perfect sized pumpkin carving pattern. I used Adobe Illustrator to produce this and then printed it off.

After slapping on my “Oscar the Bunny” pumpkin carving pattern with tape (not the most divine looking job), I started poking holes on the line art and pumpkin. This guide will make it easier for me to carve latter on.

After removing the pumpkin pattern, this is what it looks like. We’ll need to scoop out the pulp and seeds first from this large monster and then we can start carving away!

So that's what you look like underneath that paper!
Like master surgeon I carved out Oscar and he came out looking like this! So cute!

Strike a pose!
Stay pumpkin! Stay!

Well hello there.
After all that hard work, it’s time bare witness to the fruits of my labor! So let’s fire up this bad boy – The Oscar o Lantern!

;)
Ooooooooh! What a beauty!
Have a safe and happy Halloween! Trick or treat! – Albert.
